NRG Connection Checklist

SOFTWARE

Software problems can be a lot harder to pin down and some times, they can be quite inexplicable such as American modem drivers not recognising Australian dial tones. Sometimes a driver update can solve this problem.

Passwords can also be a cause of aggravation especially if you have automatic logon it is easy to have unknowingly saved the wrong password. If you think you might have put the wrong password in then logon again typing your password in manually.

Here is a checklist of some common software problems.

If you have had a lot of programs open for a while and are having trouble connecting to your service provider, sometimes the best thing you can do is simply re-boot the computer as this clears everything in memory and gives you a good, clean, fresh start.

Check that you have your modem driver installed. You can check this by right clicking on the "my computer" icon in the Win95 desktop, then click once on "properties" in the menu which is displayed. When you do this a tabbed window opens called "system properties". Now click on the tab called "device manager" in the system properties window. Make sure "view devices by type" is selected. Scroll down until you see an icon of a modem and the word modem. If there is no modem in the list that means your modem driver is not installed. There is a plus sign in front of the modem icon if it's there, click this and you will get a list of the modem drivers installed on your machine.

Make sure your password is entered correctly

If you are using Dial up Networking, make sure you don't have Trumpet Winsock installed as well.

Do you have Microsoft Network or some other Push news service? Sometimes the configuration settings for these services can cause conflict with your service providers' configuration settings.
