PRESS RELEASE - 10th May 2002

Charged With Unregistered Dog In His Possession

'Chicken' George, [a.k.a. the Plantem,] with his dog on a lead - Photo by Lucy Charlesworth When the 2002 Nimbin Mardi Grass Big Joint made the traditional stop at the local police station, to leave a bud at the door, local identity, 'Chicken' George, [a.k.a. the Plantem,] was in the parade wearing an obviously bogus police uniform with his dog on a lead, parodying the sniffer dogs of late.

Well, the new local policeman obviously had no knowledge of this quaint custom, and was alarmed at the colourful influx. The Big Joint bearers tried to tell him it was just a tradition, and they'd be finished in a minute, and gone, but the new policeman was in no mood to be amused. He said he'd be finished soon too. Poor 'Chicken' was selected as the example, subjected to a thorough search, and nothing was found, but he was charged anyway...........with having an unregistered dog in his possession. Then he was released, and the parade continued.
